MBA Committees

MBA committees create and manage various projects and offer tailored volunteer opportunities for MBA members. Some volunteer commitments involve limited time and activity while others involve monthly participation. Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Committee

This committee develops topics and recruits speakers for all CLE seminars presented by the MBA. CLE classes are designed to address the varied areas of law in which MBA members practice. If you have a suggestion for a CLE speaker or topic, call the MBA at 503.222.3275. Committee roster.

Court Liaison Committee

The goal of the MBA Court Liaison Committee is to foster constructive dialogue with the judiciary and court administrator with regard to rules or procedural changes and to assist the court in educating members about court issues. In addition, the committee surveys members on issues regarding the Multnomah County Circuit Court, writes the Multnomah Lawyer "News from the Courthouse" column and the profiles of local judges and full-time referees. Equality and Diversity Committee

The Equality and Diversity Committee is dedicated to the promotion of equality in the profession and justice system. The committee identifies ways for the MBA to promote diversity in the practice of law in the metro area, and works with other ethnic minority and/or women lawyer organizations to assist them in promoting diversity. Golf Committee

The MBA Golf Committee plans and publicizes a series of golf tournaments throughout the year at courses such as Langdon Farms, Riverside and Edgefield, culminating in an annual Championship, dinner and awards. The 2012 Championship is set for Monday, October 1 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. Past Championship venues include Columbia Edgewater, Portland Golf Club and Pumpkin Ridge. All proceeds from the Championship and other golf events benefit the Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) at Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO). Since 1981, the VLP has connected pro bono lawyers with low-income clients who otherwise would not receive legal representation. Currently, over 250 volunteer lawyers provide assistance to nearly 1900 clients each year through the VLP. Committee roster and photos.

Group Insurance Committee

The Group Insurance Committee reviews rates from current health insurance providers and negotiates with them to provide members with a range of health insurance plans and a variety of benefits. In addition, the committee assesses alternative coverage options and any additional programs for the members. Committee roster.

Judicial Screening Committee

Made up of 21 lawyer and three public members, the MBA Judicial Screening Committee screens judicial appointment and pro tem candidates using the current MBA process. Committee roster.

Membership Committee

The committee recommends recruitment and retention efforts to ensure that the MBA's membership reflects the diversity of the legal profession in the Portland area. The committee also plans social events including the MBA's annual WinterSmash event which benefits CourtCare, the free, drop-in childcare program provided in the Multnomah County Courthouse. Professionalism Committee

The Professionalism Committee fosters professional conduct in the legal profession. The committee administers a large firm professionalism training program, distributes the professionalism statement, works with the MBA Young Lawyers Section and staff on the MBA Mentor Program, administers the MBA Professionalism Award Nomination & Selection Process and writes the "Corner Office" column for the Multnomah Lawyer. The committee also works to increase members' formal commitment to providing pro bono legal representation for those who are in need by encouraging members to sign the Pro Bono Pledge.
