YLS Imprint Program Seeks Volunteers

To get involved, please complete the volunteer survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5CJ9K62

This popular program is sponsored by the YLS Service to the Public Committee and is a way for high school students to connect with attorneys in their community. The program also provides an opportunity for the students to develop written and analytical skills. Each student in the participating class will be paired with a volunteer attorney, and both will be assigned to read the same novel over a 2-3 month period. Volunteers will be assigned one of the following five novels:

The Last Leaves Falling, by Sarah Benwell
The Samurai's Garden, by Gail Tsukiyama
A Time to Dance, by Padma Venkatraman
Life of Pi, by Yann Martel
Bamboo People, by Mitali Perkins
The Alchemist, by Paulo Chelho

The student and attorney will write approximately three letters each, discussing both their lives and interests, as well as discussing the portion of the novel that was read that week. By the end of the program, the student and attorney will have developed a mentoring relationship. Prior to reading and discussing the book via letter, volunteers will send an introductory letter to students introducing themselves. Volunteers are responsible for mailing their introductory letter to their student no later than February 4.

In lieu of an in-person orientation, volunteers will be provided with written orientation materials to review and can contact the program facilitator with questions.

Program-End Celebration
COVID-19 permitting, an in-person, program-end party will be held at Parkrose High School sometime in the spring (exact time and date TBD) to celebrate the program's conclusion and to allow volunteers and students to meet in person. In the survey provided, please note if you would like to be placed in the same class with another volunteer to ensure that you attend the same program-end celebration. If it is safe to hold an in-person celebration in the spring, refreshments will be provided.
