The MBA Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and Oregon Women Lawyers are putting on a half-day CLE at the Federal Courthouse focusing on ways that attorneys and legal professionals can interrupt racism. Many of us have attended workshops or CLEs on recognizing that biases, implicit and otherwise, and forms of oppression that exist. This workshop aims to go one step beyond recognition and provide us with tools on how we can interrupt or intervene in an appropriate way when we see it happening. Our speakers, Kasia Rutledge and Rakeem Washington, have provided a brief description below.

Opt In to Race Forward: Interactive Workshop on Interrupting Racism

Frustrated about racist jokes in your workplace, but not sure how to engage? Curious about your role in anti-racism work? Not sure when to intervene and when to hold your tongue?

Race is the topic of our time. In our personal and professional lives, race talk is unavoidable. When speaking with peers, colleagues, students, or clients, or in a classroom, courtroom, meeting, or an office, the topic of race will inevitably come up. It is the conversation that we must have. But for many of us, the question is how?

This interactive workshop will focus on building understanding and skills to recognize when oppression is happening, learn how to spot power and systemic structures, identify one's role and ability to engage, and develop hands-on practical tools to help interrupt and address racism.

Kasia Rutledge and Rakeem Washington will lead an interactive workshop on how to discuss race. The workshop aims to equip attendees with tools and skills for effective and meaningful engagement. As legal advocates, ignoring the race elephant in the room is not an option. Opt in to this workshop on how to move the race dialogue forward.

Registration fee is $20.

The MBA will apply for Access to Justice MCLE credit.
